Check Engine Light Diagnosis and Repair In Missoula.
A check engine light can mean anything from a gas cap that isn't sealing to a misfire that's hurting your catalytic converter. We find out which it is, then explain what needs fixing now and what can wait.
What your check engine light is telling you
The check engine light comes on when your vehicle's computer sees a problem with the engine, the emissions system, a sensor that monitors them or, on many vehicles, the transmission. It stores a trouble code describing which system or circuit is out of range. The light doesn't tell you how serious the problem is, and the code doesn't tell you which part failed. That's what diagnosis is for.
Pay attention to how the light is acting. A steady light means the computer found a fault and it should be checked soon. A flashing light usually means a misfire bad enough to damage the catalytic converter. If yours is flashing, ease off, avoid hard acceleration and get it checked before driving much farther.
The causes cover a lot of ground. Some are small, like a gas cap that isn't sealing or a sensor that's failing. Some are emissions faults, like a leak in the system that captures fuel vapor or a catalytic converter that isn't working efficiently. Others are mechanical, like misfires, vacuum leaks or a thermostat stuck open so the engine never fully warms up. Left alone, some of these hurt fuel economy and some lead to bigger damage.
That's why we don't just read the code and replace the part it names. We pull the codes and the freeze frame data that shows conditions when the fault was recorded, look at live sensor readings, and then test the specific circuit or component involved. An oxygen sensor code, for example, can be caused by the sensor, its wiring, an exhaust leak or an engine that's running too rich or too lean. Replacing the sensor without checking can leave you with the same light and less money.
Once we know the cause, you'll hear it in plain language: what's wrong, how urgent it is, what can wait and what each option costs before we start. If you've already been told you need a big repair because of a check engine light, we'll give you a free second opinion.
After the repair, the codes are cleared and the system is checked. Some emissions monitors need a stretch of normal driving to finish their self tests, so it's normal for a few to show as not ready for a little while.
If your light is on, call or schedule a visit and tell us anything you've noticed along with it, like rough running, a smell, a change in fuel economy or when it first came on.
Problems we fix
Steady check engine light
The computer has stored a fault in the engine, emissions system or a related sensor. It should be tested soon, but it usually isn't an emergency.
Flashing check engine light
Usually an active misfire. Unburned fuel can overheat and damage the catalytic converter, so limit driving and have it checked.
Rough idle or misfire
Often an ignition, fuel delivery or vacuum leak problem. The code may point to a cylinder or a system, and testing finds the part.
Drop in fuel economy
A faulty sensor or a thermostat stuck open can make the engine run richer than it should.
Gas cap or evap codes
A cap that isn't sealing or a leak in the system that captures fuel vapor. Even small leaks keep the light on.
Light on with a shifting problem
On many vehicles, transmission faults also set the check engine light. We do transmission work too, so we can follow the problem wherever it leads.

Excellent Service! I took my car to them for a full transmission fluid flush and refill, brake fluid full flush and replace, and an oil change. These are Good People. They do Great Work for a Fraction of the Price the Dealership wanted to charge me. They are now my go to shop.Mike W. · Google
I’ve got both my suspension and my clutch replaced in my WRX by them, and they were super quick! Quoted me up to a week both times, but I got my car back within 2 days, both times. Really great work!!

John is a top-notch mechanic and an honest person. Instead of charging me for a lot of parts that I didn’t need, he told me he couldn’t diagnose the exact spot in my suspension that was making noise. We agreed that I would drive my car a little longer and see if it gets worse. He used suspension ears and spent a lot of time trying to diagnose my car. Many shops would’ve just told me I needed struts and would’ve charged the normal labor and mark up on parts. He might not have solved my problem but kudos to John and his team for not just throwing parts at it. I would HIGHLY recommend them if you’re looking for a trustworthy shop in the Missoula area.Tony D. · Google
