Transmission service covers everything from checking and changing the fluid to tracking down a shifting problem and repairing what's causing it. An automatic transmission relies on its fluid to shift, stay lubricated and stay cool, so a small problem like a leak or worn-out fluid can turn into a big one if it's ignored.
It matters even more around here. Mountain grades, towing and long climbs keep a transmission under steady load. That load makes heat, and heat breaks down transmission fluid. Once the fluid can't protect the clutch packs and other internal parts, you start seeing slipping, delayed shifts and eventually internal damage. Catching a problem early is often the difference between a service or a repair and a much bigger job.
Signs it's time to bring it in
- The engine revs up but the vehicle doesn't pick up speed the way it should.
- A delay or a clunk when you shift into drive or reverse.
- Shifts that are harsh, late or erratic.
- A shudder that feels like driving over rumble strips.
- Fluid spots under the vehicle or a burning smell.
- A check engine or transmission warning light.
What happens next
Our approach is to diagnose before we replace anything. That means checking the fluid level and condition, scanning for stored codes and driving the vehicle to feel what you're feeling. On modern vehicles, a lot of shifting problems come from sensors, wiring, solenoids or the fluid itself rather than a failed transmission.
Once we know what's going on, we'll tell you what we found, what needs attention now and what can wait, and what each option costs. Work doesn't start until you've given us the go-ahead. If there's internal damage, we'll explain whether a repair, a rebuild or a replacement makes the most sense. We do all three.
